The European Union is concerned about the dismissals on Twitter, as well as the reduction of control over undesirable content in this social network, European Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders said after talks at the headquarters of the social network in Dublin.
“During the meeting at Twitter headquarters, I stressed that we expect that voluntary commitments regarding compliance with the Law on Digital Services and the Regulation on the Protection of Personal Data in the EU will be fulfilled,” Reynders said in a message on this social network.
Earlier, the EU published a report according to which Twitter and other social networks have significantly reduced the consideration of notifications about the publication of calls for violence and hatred in accordance with EU rules in this area.
In addition, according to the Financial Times, the social network closed its representative office in Brussels after employees responsible for compliance with Twitter content with European rules left it.
After the acquisition of the online platform by Elon Musk in October 2022 for $ 44 billion, Twitter is being pursued by a series of changes both in the management of the company and in the policies of the social network itself.
Musk promised to liberalize the editorial policy of the social network, which has been criticized a lot for harsh censorship, and to create a content moderation council, and until the council works, not to make global decisions about editorial policy and the restoration of blocked accounts. Musk also warned that the social network “will do a lot of stupid things” in the near future. The company intends to “keep what works and change what doesn’t work.”
The European Commission said it was monitoring developments around Twitter and was thinking about other possible channels for information exchange.
